Colorado Trail Day 3: Exploring Nature Along the CT

My journey began two days ago, starting at Waterton Canyon to embark on the Colorado Trail (CT). But why? Because I love nature! Growing up in South Carolina, I would often escape into the woods. Nature, with its peace and serenity, has always called to me. As an adult, that call has only grown stronger. At 47, the urge to immerse myself in nature became so overwhelming that it pushed me to change my circumstances, and it turned out for the best.

On Thursday, July 4, 2024, around 11:00 AM, I was dropped off at Waterton Canyon. I felt no worries, just a single thought: “I can’t believe I am here.” I am now a free agent in every sense, living my dream of enjoying nature, camping, and traveling more often. By around 6 PM on Friday, July 5, 2024, I reached the end of Segment 1. I was tired and hot but far from disappointed. The first segment was both amazing and challenging, making it all worth it. I’m unsure how many segments of the CT I’ll complete this summer, but I intend to savor every moment. I finished the first segment in 7 hours and 12 minutes, hiking 16.73 miles with a 2,398-foot elevation gain.

At the end of yesterday, I decided to take a rest day today. I’m still undecided about whether I’ll take another rest day tomorrow. My main concern is my pack and the amount of food I’m carrying. When I decide to hike Segment 2, I’ll need to start at first light. The cooler morning air will help with the ascent, keeping me from getting too hot. But first, I need to figure out how to lighten my pack. What can I do to make it lighter?
