This morning, I woke up ready to set out. I packed my gear and began my journey through the rest of Segment 2. I wasn’t paying attention to the trail markers, but when I checked the trail map on my phone, I realized I had entered Segment 3.
Segment 3 had some areas affected by a prescribed burn from about a month ago. Even though my pack is 6 lbs lighter, I’m still struggling. This hike has been a great learning experience for future treks. I’ve decided that Segment 3 or Segment 4 will be my last segment for this summer.
The two most difficult aspects for me are the discomfort of my pack, indicating that I’ll need a different pack for next summer, and keeping my electronics charged. Trying to charge my phone and GPS communicator with a solar power bank has been very challenging.
As a vegan, I’ve managed, but this has been a minor factor in my decision. However, I met a hiker who recommended Backpacker’s Pantry, which offers dehydrated vegan meals.
I’ve learned a lot over the past few days and don’t regret only doing a few segments. I’ll take these lessons to ensure I’m better prepared next year.
